Modern art deco staircase balustrade
Fine Iron were approached by a high end property company to provide a solution for a complete staircase with stone clad treads, a striking continuous balustrade railing and an antique brass handrail.
Steel stair structure
A detailed survey was carried out before we designed the steel structure for the staircase along with half landings from the basement to the 2nd floor. This entailed working with our structural engineer to ensure the staircase satisfied all necessary requirements.
Following the installation of this the steel staircase carcass was clad in 18mm ply prior to the fitting of the Portland stone. The cut steel strings had plasterboard bonded to it by the main contractors on site ready for plastering and painting by the clients decorators.
A temporary timber safety rail was put in place by the contractors whilst we manufactured the balustrade and corerails. Once manufacture was complete the balustrade was finished in our own hand mixed bronze patina paint system and was mounted to the baserail and corerail with 16mm steel balls.
Antique brass handrail
The image above on the right shows the handrail being hot formed to the corerail on our wreaths – once the forming and hot wreathing was complete the next stage was to revisit site to offer the handrail up to the installed balustrade and check for any adjustments required. Once we were satisfied that the handrail was a perfect fit we then proceeded to polishing the handrail before sending it to our patination shop for our in house antique brass patination process. The finished handrail then had 3 coats of renaissance wax applied before being returned to site for the final fitting to the balustrade.
The final result
We are sure you will agree from the images above of the finished staircase that the balustrade and handrail are an exquisite, timeless classic. The design is modern with an Art Deco feel adding a touch of old Hollywood Glamour and will surely be a strikingly elegant feature of this property for many years!
