This blending of old and new necessitates a considered outlook in order to create a seamless natural finish so a clear vision from the start is essential.
Hand Carved Walnut Handrail
The stone in this Georgian residence was natural, so in order to support this strong and grand feature the handrail chosen was hand carved out of walnut giving for the impression of something solid and traditional but with an equal amount of depth and colour to provide a lasting up to date look. The iron balustrades were forged 14 mm with a cast decorative boss to the centre and finished with base collar. Following preparation a primer then undercoat was applied and finally a dark graphite finish was achieved by mixing graphite powder to the final coat that was then polished back when dry.
To say that no stone was left unturned would be a true statement, as the end result would make you question how the solid stone staircase could ever be without the balustrade and handrail. The match is perfect and the combination contemporary, modern and timeless.
There is consistent detail but it is simple, straightforward and uncluttered. The top landing almost replicates a harp in some way, the balustrades forming the ‘would be’ strings that quite literally sing out. All a living harmony that is sure to live on.
