High Quality Balustrade for a Natural Stone Cantilever Staircase

The architect Stephen Laving approached Fine Iron to work on a balustrade & handrail within a private residence in Knutsford. The detail of the work had to be hand crafted in stone and able to compliment a sweeping, elegant cantelever staircase. An art deco style was chosen which went through many stages of transformation in order to achieve a fitting tribute in its final fixture.

Hot Forged Ironwork Twists

The balustrade and handrails had bespoke fabricated 16mm collars and underwent hot forged twists that reflected the natural curvature of the stairwell. During the manufacture stage Fine Iron duly accommodated Stephen’s request to alter the original remit of the finish, this was achieved by supplying the client with many different samples; each creating the subtle differentiation of an aged bronze effect.

Copper Plating & Patination

Once the exact finish was chosen all the balustrades & collars underwent copper plating and were treated to a chemical patination to create the effect of a naturally aged patina. Variations of highlights and lowlights were delicately layered in order to complete the overall finish.

Clear lines embody the structure of the staircase; this can also be seen in the south facing leaded windows. There is an element of a crescent developing in the final decent of the staircase which breaks up these clean clear lines, without however, taking away any of their strength. The result of the work carried out by Fine Iron serves as a bridge to this end while also creating its own purpose.

Client: Stephen Levin – Architect
