Bespoke Ornate Balustrade with Carved Oak Handrail


This stair balustrade has been crafted from wrought iron, cast iron and mild steel capped with an oak handrail.

The ironwork has been painted and fixed into the marble treads, the junctions between treads and balusters have been finished with cast iron covers.

Citigate Homes are an established client of Fine Iron and early in 2011 they approached us about the concept of a steel stair substructure, balustrade and handrail for a new build house in Virginia Water, Surrey. Our brief was to design and manufacture a bespoke balustrade and handrail that was contemporary in design. The feature would complete a feature staircase in the entrance hall of a private residence.


The handrail that flows from landing to floor level is made of a continuous hand carved oak, which was polished by Fine Iron to create an effortlessly antique look. The client wanted the bespoke balustrades to juxtapose with the handrail; they asked Fine Iron to create a contemporary style for the metalwork. The contrast between antique and modern required various creative techniques, so the balustrade underwent a unique process during the manufacture. Fine Iron formed and fabricated a solid string carcass with mild steel folded treads, which were cast in stone by the client’s stonemasons. The turned bright steel was chemically treated before being applied to the balustrade. This allowed the staircase to emanate with an opulent black/blue metallic finish. Bronze turnings were then used for mid detail and base cover. These were polished before renaissance wax was applied to all of the metal work, in order to permanently retain the lustre and shine.
